Free Sample Conumdrum

I am sitting outside my favorite tea shoppe enjoying the balmy weather with a cool ice tea. The girl is giving out free samples to passersby and I am getting a real chuckle at their reactions. As typical commercial ice tea in Canada is sweetened, people make quite the face when they taste the natural taste of good ol` authentic iced sans the sugar. One guy walked past only to back up admitting in a quite amusing robotic voice “that would be re-fresh-ing”. It`s comical to hear what comments people make after sampling the drink. “Tastes like potpourri.” “Interesting!” “A for effort” and “hummmm”….are a few of the latest. Generally though, they just shift from foot to foot trying to think of some complimentary one liner that will seem grateful but not too interested. Afterall, free samples are a touchy situation as you want to be polite but not feel obligated to go in and buy anything.

I love people watching here on Whyte Ave but my all black choice of wardrobe will keep me from sitting on this patio for too long. What was I thinking this morning? Clearly, I wasn`t. No matter as I have a haircut appointment in a half hour anyway which should keep me from melting away completely.

Almost every second person is carrying an ice cream or slurpee to keep their temperature from boiling over. A man strolls by with a somewhat guilty look on his face as I smile at his triple scoop monstrosity. Hey man, I am not judging you! His look morphs from a 30 year old man into a 6 year old. Now his face beams with a certain feeling of proud accomplishment. Demolish that baby, chocolate dipped waffle cone and all! Priceless.

I always seem to get the best parking spots just right next to my table which makes hopping up and plugging the meter with coins quite an easy task. I found out that if a meter maid begins writing you a parking ticket, that there is nothing they can do if you hop in your vehicle and drive away. So don`t bother standing there and arguing the merits of a quarter. As long as you take off before they are done writing the ticket, they cannot legally fine you. This is what I have heard anyway. I have yet to prove this theory.
