Impromptu Dinner and Dancing

Shelley picked me up late that afternoon and we began our road trip to Calgary. I love these surprise mini-trips that manifest out of nowhere. We stopped to grab some snacks and then were off down the highway. Shell played leapfrog with the big trucks and other roadtrippers on their way to Cowtown. We passed through a short but intense storm which threw some heavy rain and hail at us. Shell asked it to stop because she didn`t want any dents her new car and as swiftly ads it began, it ended. And then the sun came out beaming rays of light through the misty clouds. read more

Possession

On Saturday morning, my realtor picked me up and whisked me off to my new condo. It was possession day which means the keys are mine. Unfortunately I inherited some renters with my spectacular view. In a month or two, they will leave and I will be able to fill the place with my stuff rather than theirs. It was a bit weird sitting there trying to absorb the fact that I now own this space because I can`t make it mine. Not just yet. read more

Mid Summer-y

It`s hard to believe that we are just at the half way point but August is right around the corner. I guess now would be a good time for a summer-y of what I have been up to. The summer started when I went to Hawaii and I was able to get quite a nice base tan that I have slowly been building on. Its really the first time I have maintained a tan all season. I usually can`t be bothered to take the time out to go lay out. I just get too hot and bored but it`s been really easy to just grab a few rays at a time. I usually just wear a little less and walk around outside more. Edmonton is well known for having the highest number of sunlight hours in all of Canada. I have taken full advantage of this but I think this will be first and last time I ever make an effort to stay bronzed for the whole summer. Was an interesting experiment but I don`t want to look like leather when I`m forty. read more

Play Time

One nice thing about Edmonton summers is the multitude of things to do at any given time, on any given day. If and when you are bored, it is completely your choosing. I have been feeling bored lately then I realized that this was a state in my control. So I decided to throw myself in the thick of things starting with a visit to the highly acclaimed Shakespeare in the Park. read more

Free Sample Conumdrum

I am sitting outside my favorite tea shoppe enjoying the balmy weather with a cool ice tea. The girl is giving out free samples to passersby and I am getting a real chuckle at their reactions. As typical commercial ice tea in Canada is sweetened, people make quite the face when they taste the natural taste of good ol` authentic iced sans the sugar. One guy walked past only to back up admitting in a quite amusing robotic voice “that would be re-fresh-ing”. It`s comical to hear what comments people make after sampling the drink. “Tastes like potpourri.” “Interesting!” “A for effort” and “hummmm”….are a few of the latest. Generally though, they just shift from foot to foot trying to think of some complimentary one liner that will seem grateful but not too interested. Afterall, free samples are a touchy situation as you want to be polite but not feel obligated to go in and buy anything. read more

Notion of Commotion with the Motion of the Ocean

I have had quite a lot of changes lately and it appears that there are more to come. Finally all the bank stuff with the new property is done but negotiations were not easy. Mortgages, interest rates and property assessments used to be hip to my slang but now, it appears that I have lost the language. I sat there signing oodles of paperwork feeling quite clueless. My only guess is that brain cells that were used for budgets and finance and technologies are a bit rusty. I realized that I should really be old hat at this having done it twice before. It appears that I go through this re-financing/property buying phase every 5 years. It seems to be the one investment that seems most profitable in this economy. read more

Melancholy

I have been especially lethargic after the string of disappointments I have felt lately. My car was robbed just reinforcing my decision to leave this neighbourhood. Ok. So I didn`t lock the door in my optimistic naivety. But now I am finding myself double and triple checking all my locks, house and car, are secured. I feel a touch Obsessive Compulsive and really have to concentrate on putting my anxiety back into perspective. Shame on you little thieves who spiralled me into a spot of suspiciousness! read more
