What I learned about Courage

The dictionary definitions are:

Bravery: quality of spirit that enables you to face danger of pain without showing fear.
Fortitude: the habit of encountering danger and enduring pain with a steadfast and unbroken spirit.
Courage: firmness of spirit and swell of soul which meets danger without fear.

My definition is:

· Courage is believing in your self.
· Courage is ripping off the bandaid.
· Courage is depending on your little sister.
· Courage is trying again.
· Courage is smiling at a stranger.
· Courage is being the new girl in class.
· Courage is forgiving someone who hurt you.
· Courage is falling in love.

There came a time when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.

· Courage is saying no when you need to.
· Courage is admitting your weaknesses. I remember my big strong father taking swimming lessons with me when I was 5 years old. He was deathly afraid of water. I still remember watching him him accross the pool slowly easing his way into the shallow water, silently cheering him on. Thanks Dad.
· Courage is taking responsibility for your actions.
· Courage is admitting that you cant afford it.
· Courage is not giving in to pressure.
· Courage is singing the song even though you dont know all the words.

· Courage is learning.
· Courage is watching your sister move far away. And letting her take your nephews.
· Courage is ignoring all the naysayers and critics.
· Courage is sharing your soul.
· Courage is planting a flower in a dump. In a township in South Africa, amist all the broken down shantys and trash, a patch of green caught my eye. One family had planted flowers and vines and shrubs all around their tiny yard even partially covering the makeshift corregated iron made house. Carefully tended to and trimmed, a great sense of dignity and hope shone forth from this home. Mom, it reminded me of your little white picket fence. Altho they kept trampling the flowers, you just kept planting them. Now I understand.
· Courage is crying instead of holding it all in.
· Courage is speaking up when its not the popular opinion.

One’s real life is often the life that one does not lead.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didnt do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
Mark Twain

So all this time I didnt really think I knew much about courage. Turns out I was brave all along. I have been learning it my whole life from all the people around me. Just because you don’t feel brave, doesn’t mean you arn’t.

Courage is a lion
Courage is a mouse
Courage is the step you take
When you dare to leave your house
